Smithsonian Institution BUILDING Revitalization
THE GREAT HALL: MEDIA
The project also worked with architecture and ambience.
Created a Great Hall Visitor Center Interim Plan before major renovation of the original 1855 Smithsonian building (the Castle), honoring sustainability and accessibility within a tight budget and historic preservation constraints.
Led collaborative experience design with the Special Advisor to the Secretary and over 30 staff members. Conceptualization, visualizations, and actionable plans for device management and iPad content (including nineteenth century guidebooks and compasses), solar charging for visitor phones, soft seating and a 3D printed, cast-bronze touch map with Braille offered a coordinated plan for a welcoming visitor experience.
“Living walls” of plants were tested in collaboration with Smithsonian Horticulture and reflect the origins of the building, dedicated to the study of natural history.
Themes like the 4-directions compass app were coordinated with merchandising for the store, with compasses, magnifying glasses, etc..
Not produced due to staffing changes.
