WINDOWS

Visitor approach to the iconic 1849 Smithsonian Institution Building from the National Mall and DC Metro doesn’t feel welcoming or offer confirmation that the building is open and active. Low-cost suggestions included:

  • printed blinds and/or photosensitive solar windows from identified companies that would add a layer of UV/HEV protection for objects while allowing visitors to charge phones with the energy harvested from windows.

  • A small exhibition on the Smithsonian's long history of solar energy research at the building known as "the Castle" would underscore a commitment to sustainability.

  • A prism theme was suggested, with each museum identified with a color.

The plan was under consideration but not produced.
